Announcements
- Free swimming at the Overbrook pool this Sunday for fathers and grandfathers
- We are committed to having a concession stand at the 4th of July event at Brookside
- Meeting tonight with Foundation and Library to look at possible projects needed
- Tonight at 6pm at Conrad’s
Speaker: Jeff King
- Not Associated with the county government
- Goal to reduce underage drinking and other drug prevention (smoking, etc.)
- Important for community as a whole to work together to address underage drinking
- “Whenever there is underage drinking there is an adult involved”
- Activity
- Jon Brady represents youth dealing with peer pressure
- Randy Durbin represents another youth attempting to persuade Jon (peer pressure)
- Timothy Humphrey represents law enforcement – enforcing current laws
- Bob Klingler represents a parent – caring for children
- Gerry Coffman represents the schools – educating children on dangers of alcohol/drugs
- Max Friesen represents a fellow youth – positive peer influence (eg. SADD)
- Bruce Smith represents business – donate funds & resources to assist with educating youths
- Yolanda Dickinson represents community organizations (such as Rotary) that can assist with educating youth
- J.A. Cordts represents faith community – training parents and educating youths
- Cheryl Miller represents media who are reporting on alcohol/drug issues
- Jon Wilhite represents youth organizations (Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.)
- Don Schultz represents government assisting with programs to educate youth/parents
- All positive influences surround Jon Brady to help block out negative influence by Randy
- All positive influences work together through cooperation – represented by locking their arms
- Divorce in family so parent leaves a gap
- Law enforcement budget cuts so law enforcement officer leaves another gap
- Schools have budget cuts so resource officer leaves leaving yet another gap
- Young person falls into the wrong crowd so peer leaves
- Economy drops so business person not able to participate and leaves
- Not much community service so organization leaves
- Faith organizations have too much going on
- Youth organizations fail to reach youth
- Government doesn’t have time/resources to help so they leave youth by himself to fend against negative influences (Randy)
- It’s important that we all as a community work together to prevent youths from underage drinking/drug abuse
- Don Schultz mentioned the recent vandalism/theft at the grocery store last week
- A local youth stood up and spoke out about what he knew and an arrest was made
- It makes a difference just to have an adult call a youth by their first name
- Alcohol/drug abuse has been becoming a problem for younger and younger kids
- You can never start educating children too early about alcohol/drug abuse
- Rotary activities like the fishing derby can be of assistance to at risk youth
